Frozen AC in Jackson, MO

When warm weather arrives in Jackson, MO, you don’t want issues with your AC unit. However, a common problem you may experience is a frozen air conditioner unit. Learn the frequent causes of frozen air conditioners and what to do about them.

Causes of Frozen AC Units

A blocked or clogged air filter is a common cause of frozen air conditioners, usually from a lack of maintenance. A blocked or dirty filter prevents air from passing through, which may get trapped in the coils.

Another likely culprit of a frozen AC unit is low refrigerant, which is the chemical that cools the air. Having low refrigerant levels causes the temperature inside of the evaporator coils to drop at or below freezing. Once a layer of frost has formed in the coils, additional ice often builds on them. Other causes of frozen AC units are faulty blower motors, weak airflow, and a blocked condensate drain line.

What to Do About a Frozen AC

Don’t operate the AC unit while the coils are frozen, which may damage air compressors. Find the breaker that controls the unit in your electrical panel and flip it off. It commonly takes about 24 hours for a unit to thaw completely, even on hot days.

Don’t remove the ice by hand because chisels and other sharp objects may damage parts. After the ice has melted, clean the liquid with paper towels, and run the blower motor to dry. A general rule is to replace filters more than 90 days old, but you may try cleaning them first. Vacuum dirty filters, or take them outside, rinse them with a hose, and let them dry. After the coils are dry, turn the power back on and test the unit. If the blower motor is damaged or there is a refrigerant leak, you will probably need an HVAC tech.
