How to Properly Winterize Your HVAC System
3 Tips for Winterizing Your HVAC System
Preparing your HVAC system for the upcoming winter months can substantially extend its working life. Winterizing, as it’s called, can also improve your heater’s performance and reduce your household energy expenditures. If you’re not already, be proud of yourself for wanting to learn more about winterizing your home’s HVAC system the right way. Use these three tips to help safeguard your HVAC from Mother Nature this winter.
1. Prime Your Furnace Before Winter Arrives
Every year, countless Americans are blindsided by malfunctioning furnaces when cold weather first rolls around. You can prevent this major mishap by testing your furnace well before winter arrives. Turn your furnace on several times no later than two weeks before you’ll need to use it. When testing your furnace, run these tests on different days. Don’t just space your furnace tests a few minutes apart.
2. Changing Your Air Filters
If you’re like most homeowners, you’re guilty of not changing your air filters as often as you should. Most HVAC technicians, including ours here at Obermanns in Jackson, tell homeowners to change them every three months.
While you’re at it, inspect your home’s air returns and vents with a bright flashlight. After removing your vents, thoroughly dust off those vent plates. Don’t forget to clean the ducts themselves. In general, more dust and debris accumulate near vents than throughout the length of ductwork.
3. Schedule Professional Maintenance
