5 Ways to Save Energy this Fall

October 17, 2019

Are you looking to heat your home with a minimum of cost and energy this fall? The following are five tips that could help you accomplish this goal. Some will take an unnecessary burden off your heater while others will prevent the good work of your heater from being spoiled.

1. Replacing Air Filters

Clogged filters, along with clogged ducts, can put stress on your heating system as it will have to work harder to circulate the air. The general rule is to replace fiberglass filters every 30 days and pleated filters every three to six months. This is a small step that produces big results in how hard your heating system has to work and how efficient it is.

2. Sealing Cracks

Don’t let the warm air escape through the cracks in your windows and doors; seal these cracks with foam tape, foam sealant or a tube of caulk. A more drastic solution is to install energy-efficient double-pane windows.

3. Adding Insulation

Insulation will keep the heat from escaping, too, provided that it’s thick enough or that its R-value is high enough. Whether it’s in your attic or your wall cavities, you may need to add insulation or upgrade to a kind with a higher R-value. “R” means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

4. Programming the Thermostat

Our team at Obermanns can calibrate thermostats and even fit homeowners in Jackson, MO, with the high-quality smart thermostats made by Lennox. Even if you don’t own a smart thermostat, though, you can save on your energy bills by programming it accordingly. When you’re out of the house, bring the temperature down a few degrees.

5. Maintaining the Heating Unit

Regular tune-ups are always a good idea. You can leave them to us or complete a few of the basic tasks (including air filter replacement) yourself. With maintenance, the heating unit will run at peak performance and be less likely to break down.
